Inzolia

Inzolia, often also written Insolia and known as Ansonica in Tuscany, is a white grape mainly associated with Sicily. It has historical links with Marsala but is now widely enjoyed as a dry white wine grape.

The wines tend to show pear, citrus, yellow apple, herbs and almond-like notes, often with moderate acidity and a soft, Mediterranean texture.

What does Inzolia taste like?

Inzolia usually offers pear, lemon, yellow apple, melon, wild herbs and a gentle almond or nutty note. Compared with sharper white grapes, it often feels softer and rounder on the palate.

Fresh stainless-steel styles are clean and citrus-led, while more textured versions may show savoury, waxy or lightly saline qualities. The best wines retain enough freshness to balance their natural breadth.

Where does Inzolia come from?

Inzolia is most important in Sicily, especially in the island's western and coastal areas. It has also been used historically in Marsala production and in dry Sicilian white blends.

In Tuscany, the same grape is often called Ansonica, particularly along coastal zones and islands. Internationally, however, Inzolia remains closely linked with Italian Mediterranean white wine.

What styles of Inzolia are there?

Most Inzolia is dry white wine, either bottled varietally or blended with grapes such as Catarratto and Grillo. These wines are usually fresh, gently aromatic and suited to early drinking.

More serious examples may use lees contact, older vines or careful skin contact to build texture. The grape can be savoury and quietly complex, but it is rarely aggressively aromatic.

What food pairs with Inzolia?

Inzolia is a natural match for Sicilian seafood, grilled vegetables, caponata, pasta with sardines, lemony chicken and fresh cheeses. Its almond-like note works well with herbs and olive oil.

Fuller versions can handle swordfish, tuna, risotto, roast vegetables and mild sheep's cheese. Serve it cool enough for freshness but not so cold that its texture disappears.
