At the Scharzhof of Egon Müller in Wiltingen on the Saar, within Germanys Mosel region, Riesling is not a stylistic choice but a form of cultural memory. The estate has been in family hands since 1797, and its centre of gravity is the legendary Scharzhofberg, a steep south-facing Devonian slate slope counted among Europes great white wine terroirs.The work remains uncompromisingly tied to origin: low yields, selective hand-picking, old vines, some ungrafted, and cellar practice that preserves the tension between acidity, residual sugar and mineral line. Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and the rare noble-sweet Prädikat wines are not displays of luxury, but the natural consequence of an extreme site.
