Gantenbein Daniel&Marta

At Daniel and Marta Gantenbein in Fläsch, in Switzerlands Bündner Herrschaft, the modern legend begins in 1982. Self-taught, curious and uncompromising, they planted Burgundian clones and turned a few hectares on the edge of the Rhine Valley into one of the most precise voices of alpine Pinot culture.

The vineyards lie at around 500 metres, shaped by limestone-rich soils, foehn wind, cool nights and a sheltered position below the mountains. Pinot Noir is the centre, with Chardonnay and small Riesling parcels completing the idea; dense planting and extensive handwork set the rhythm.

Gantenbein impresses not through size, but through concentration. The celebrated brick winery stands as a modern sign among the vines, yet the real architecture lies in detail: selective picking, precise vinification, restrained élevage and the belief that Fläsch can speak a Burgundian language with a Swiss accent.
