Gritsch
In Spitz, Lower Austria, at the heart of the Wachau, FJ Gritsch brings centuries of wine culture into a precise contemporary setting. The focal point is the 13th-century Mauritiushof, owned by the family since 1799. Its historic fabric now meets a wine experience centre opened in 2022 and the modern Kalmuck cellar, established in 2015 for exacting cellar work.Grüner Veltliner and Riesling shape the estate through terraced sites including Singerriedel, Steinporz, Setzberg, Loibenberg, Kalkofen and 1000-Eimerberg. Dry-stone walls, steep parcels and weathered gneiss define much of the landscape; Singerriedel reaches gradients of up to 70 percent, with shallow soils over paragneiss. Wachau DAC origin, hand harvesting and a strong single-vineyard focus provide a disciplined framework. For Gritsch, quality begins in the vineyard: careful cultivation, detailed site knowledge and modern cellar precision serve the character of the Wachau.
