Jacques-Frederic Mugnier
At Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of Burgundy, the story begins in 1863 with Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur maker from Dijon. In the late nineteenth century the family acquired important vineyards; the Château de Chambolle-Musigny followed in 1899, and Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1902.Today the domaine is closely tied to Chambolle: Musigny Grand Cru, Bonnes-Mares, Les Fuées, Les Amoureuses and village parcels form one of the most refined Pinot Noir maps of the Côte de Nuits. Limestone, thin soils and cool exposures call for extraction that listens more than it shapes.
Mugnier stands for Burgundian transparency. After years of leasing, key parcels returned to estate control; the style has become even clearer since then: silky structure, restrained élevage, little noise and a premier cru language that lets Chambolle hover rather than explain itself.
