Jacques Selosse

In Avize on the Côte des Blancs, Jacques Selosse has reshaped the idea of grower Champagne. The family produced its first wine under its own name in 1964, while Anselme Selosse developed the estate from the 1970s through a Burgundian focus on soil, parcel and base wine. The domaine now covers 8.3 hectares in 54 plots, largely Grand Cru, across Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Ambonnay.

Chardonnay accounts for 7.3 hectares and Pinot Noir for one hectare; many vines exceed 55 years, with the oldest dating to 1922. Farming follows no fixed doctrine, but an adaptive philosophy inspired by permaculture, observation and minimal disturbance. In the cellar, indigenous yeasts, French oak and extended ageing on fine lees preserve each origin. Low dosage, the solera-based Substance and the six Lieux-Dits launched in 2010 place Jacques Selosse among Champagne’s most uncompromising interpreters of place and time.
