Marques de Murrieta

At Marqués de Murrieta in Rioja Alta, near Logroño, a central chapter of Spanish wine history begins in 1852. Don Luciano de Murrieta brought from Bordeaux a new understanding of ageing and longevity to Rioja; in 1872 he acquired Finca Ygay, still the heart of the bodega today.

The 300 hectares of Finca Ygay lie in southern Rioja Alta and surround the winery and castle. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha define classic red Rioja structure, while Viura and other white varieties preserve the tradition of long-aged whites. Reserva, Gran Reserva and patient barrel ageing form part of the cultural grammar.

Marqués de Murrieta is Rioja aristocracy without immobility. Under Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga and winemaker María Vargas, the house links historic architecture, precise vineyard work and modern sensitivity. Finca Ygay is not scenery, but origin.
