Saute Loup

In the quiet heart of Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Saute-Loup carries the elusive words Réserve de la Famille, a private bottling linked to Petrus, the estate acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1961 and shaped into a legend beyond any formal classification. Pomerol has no cru classé ladder; its authority is written instead in parcels, clay, restraint and the patient discipline of the cellar.

The source is the celebrated plateau, about 40 metres high, where iron-rich blue clay gives Merlot its unmistakable gravity and natural drainage keeps the vines in balance. Small historical traces of Cabernet Franc belong to the wider story, while vinification remains classically Bordeaux: concrete vats, measured extraction and carefully judged new oak. Saute-Loup is not a conventional second wine; it reads like a family-held page, discreet, rare and rooted in one of the Right Bank’s most singular terroirs.
