Tenuta Montanello
At Tenuta Montanello in Castiglione Falletto, in Piedmonts Langhe, Barbera is not isolated but placed within a great red-wine culture. The estate produces Barolo DOCG, Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, Barbera d’Alba DOC and Dolcetto d’Alba DOC, reading the landscape through the classic varieties of the hills around Alba.Barbera shows another energy of Piedmont: not Nebbiolos tannic severity, but acidity, drive and a direct connection to soil. At Montanello it is refined partly in stainless steel and bottle, partly as Crocetta with about ten months in barrique. Freshness and structure therefore become two lines of the same handwriting.
Montanello feels like a Langhe atelier where DOC and DOCG are more than categories. Barbera is treated as a serious parcel language, carried by calcareous marl, hill air and the disciplined patience of Piedmontese cellar work.
