Van Loveren
In South Africa’s Robertson Valley, Van Loveren carries a family narrative that began in 1937, when Hennie Retief senior bought land on the former Goudmyn farm. He named the estate after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his wife Jean van Zyl, giving the property a memory that still shapes its identity. Today the third Retief generation guides the vineyards, cellar and hospitality with a distinctly Cape sense of continuity. The estate works within the Breede River Valley, where limestone-influenced soils, generous sunlight and cooling mountain air help form a polished, approachable Winelands style. Precision in the cellar, careful cultivar selection and a wide portfolio reflect a house that grew from farm roots into one of South Africa’s notable family-owned wineries. The first Van Loveren bottling in 1980 marked the decisive step from grower heritage to estate brand.
