In Austria’s Burgenland, by Lake Neusiedl in the Seewinkel, Weingut Velich of Apetlon has shaped a distinctive approach to serious white wine. The lake, saline ponds, mature vines and the area’s singular Pannonian microclimate define the terroir, while cellar work is deliberately restrained to preserve origin.Chardonnay and Welschriesling form the core of the estate, joined by other white varieties. Grapes are harvested at high, balanced ripeness, the must is handled as gently as possible, and fermentations rely on natural yeasts from the vineyards. Extended time on the lees encourages integration, while selected Chardonnay matures in oak.
A historic cornerstone is the Tiglat parcel, planted in 1959, whose Chardonnay brought the winery international recognition. Darscho comes from vines between 20 and 40 years old and matures in oak casks. Velich thus combines patience, site character and precise craftsmanship in wines firmly rooted in the Seewinkel.
