Willi Haag
At Weingut Willi Haag in Brauneberg on the Middle Mosel, Germany, half a millennium of family history stands behind every barrel. Parts of the house and cellar date from around 1500; since 1995 Marcus Haag, grandson of Willi Haag, has shaped the cellar, and since 1997 he has led the entire estate. The vines grow on pure weathered slate, especially in the VDP.GROSSE LAGE sites Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr. Steep slopes, a rock-cut cellar, cool ripening and old Riesling vines create conditions in which fruit is not isolated, but translated into mineral tension.
Willi Haag connects tradition with contemporary sustainability. Hand-picking, gentle handling and the cellar carved into the rock give the wines calm; the Mosel appears here not as romantic scenery, but as a precise, bright and deeply slate-rooted landscape.
