Coto de Caleruega
In Caleruega, within Ribera del Duero, Coto de Caleruega begins as a forward-looking project grounded in a place of unusual historical depth. Created by the Barón de Ley group to set a new benchmark in one of Spain’s most prestigious D.O.s, it is built on extensive estate vineyards and a philosophy that places vineyard work at the centre of quality. Yet the setting reaches much further back: Caleruega is known as the birthplace of Saint Dominic, and the property preserves a rock-hewn underground cellar from the twelfth century, a striking reminder of the region’s long wine memory. Its identity is shaped by altitude, continental extremes and slow ripening. Between roughly 720 and more than 1,000 metres above sea level, with dry summers, long winters and sharp diurnal shifts, Tinto Fino develops concentration without sacrificing line. Clay, limestone and stony soils bring definition to the wines, favouring precision over heaviness. Coto de Caleruega thus presents Ribera del Duero as both legacy and renewal: ambitious, estate-driven and articulated through elegance rather than excess.
