Mauzac

What does Mauzac taste like?

Mauzac often smells of green apple, dried apple peel and pear. Depending on ripeness and winemaking, quince, honey, baked apple and sweet spice notes may also appear.

On the palate, styles range from fresh and light to riper and rounder. Acidity is generally moderate and can fall quickly at full ripeness, so many dry Mauzac wines are at their best young, while sparkling versions gain extra freshness from their bubbles.

Where does Mauzac come from?

The variety is considered native to the Gaillac area or the Tarn Valley in south-western France. Its main centres today are Gaillac in the Tarn department and Limoux in the Aude department.

Mauzac performs well on limestone and clay-limestone soils. Because it ripens late, it needs warm summers and a long, favourable autumn, while still requiring sufficient water during the growing season.
