Thomas Schwarz Blaufränkisch 2017 0,75l

This Blaufränkisch from Thomas Schwarz at Kloster am Spitz shows how precisely the Leithaberg terroir can be translated into red wine. On the nose it reveals clear notes of black cherry, blackberry and sour cherry, backed by violet florals and gentle herbal spice. On the palate the wine is juicy and cool in style, with dark berry fruit, a touch of pepper and a stony, mineral core. Fine grained tannins are well integrated, while fresh acidity gives tension and length. The overall impression is dense but never heavy, balancing fruit, spice and the grip of limestone soils. A characterful Blaufränkisch from Leithaberg that shines both with hearty dishes and on its own.

Ageing in used barriques and large wooden casks preserves the Blaufränkisch fruit and adds subtle oak spice.

Thomas Schwarz

Above Lake Neusiedl on the Leithaberg near Purbach, Thomas Schwarz pursues a simple ambition: to become almost unnecessary. Since taking over the family estate in 2005, farming has been organic, built on living soils rather than synthetic shortcuts....

The grape variety: Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is a Central European red grape known for dark cherry, pepper, fresh acidity and structured tannins. It is especially important in Austria and Hungary.

The grape is exciting because it combines elegance with savoury spice. Pair Blaufränkisch with duck, pork, lamb, goulash, mushrooms, sausages and hard cheeses.
