Clos Mogador Priorat 2016 12l

Clos Mogador is René Barbier’s iconic Priorat red, sourced from steep terraces around Gratallops with the region’s famous llicorella slate soils. Old vines of garnacha, carinyena, syrah and cabernet sauvignon are farmed biodynamically and harvested entirely by hand. Small crates, lengthy macerations and ageing in a mix of large foudres and barriques build depth and complexity. The bouquet is packed with black cherry, blackberry and plum, lifted by Mediterranean herbs, liquorice, graphite and dark chocolate. On the palate Clos Mogador is powerful and concentrated yet remarkably silky, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and a cool mineral spine. The very long, spicy, slate-tinged finish makes it a benchmark Priorat to pour with grilled meats, slow-cooked beef, game and rich, savoury stews.

Eighteen months in small oak barrels and large foudres give the wine depth, structure and finely integrated maturity.

Clos Mogador

In Priorat, around the village of Gratallops, Clos Mogador helped ignite the region’s revival in 1979: René Barbier replanted Garnatxa and Carinyena on steep slopes of llicorella slate and gave this rugged landscape a new voice. Old vines, meagre soils and Mediterranean heat meet cool nights and dramatic relief....
