Carignan

Carignan, also known in Spain as Cariñena, Carinyena or Mazuelo, is a red Mediterranean grape with a long and complex history. It is important in southern France, Catalonia, Aragón, Rioja, Sardinia and other warm regions around the western Mediterranean. In Spain the same grape may appear as Cariñena, Carinyena or Mazuelo, so these spellings usually point to regional language and labelling tradition rather than a separate variety.

Modern Carignan can be far more exciting than its old bulk-wine reputation suggests. From old vines and careful viticulture, it gives dark berries, cherry, herbs, spice, firm freshness and a savoury structure that feels unmistakably Mediterranean.

What does Carignan taste like?

Carignan often shows blackberry, sour cherry, plum, dried herbs, pepper, liquorice and earthy spice. It usually has vivid acidity, medium to firm tannins and a rustic edge that becomes appealing when handled with care.

The body ranges from medium to full, depending on site and yield. Old-vine examples can feel dense and concentrated, while fresher styles highlight red fruit, garrigue herbs and a lively, slightly savoury finish.

Carignan, Cariñena and Mazuelo: where is it grown?

Carignan is widely associated with the western Mediterranean and is traditionally linked with Spain and southern France. It is found under different local names, including Cariñena, Carinyena and Mazuelo, which can make labels confusing but also reveal its broad regional history.

Important areas include Languedoc-Roussillon, Catalonia, Aragón, Rioja, Priorat, Montsant and Sardinia, where Carignano del Sulcis is a notable expression. The grape thrives in warm, dry conditions and can show real depth from old vines.

Which Carignan styles are there?

Carignan is often used in blends with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre or Tempranillo, adding acidity, colour, spice and structure. These blends can be rustic and hearty or polished and complex, depending on vineyard and winemaking choices.

Varietal Carignan has become increasingly respected, especially from old vines. Styles range from juicy, unoaked reds to powerful, oak-aged wines with dark fruit, herbal depth and firm Mediterranean character.

What food pairs with Carignan?

Carignan loves robust, savoury food: grilled lamb, beef stew, barbecue, roast vegetables, sausages, ratatouille, cassoulet and dishes with rosemary, thyme or smoked paprika. Its acidity keeps rich food from feeling heavy.

It is also a strong choice with chargrilled aubergine, mushrooms, hard cheeses and slow-cooked pork. Serve fresher examples slightly cool for Mediterranean tapas and richer versions with heartier meat dishes.
