Grenache Noir

Grenache Noir, known in Spain as Garnacha Tinta and in Sardinia as Cannonau, is one of the great red grapes of the Mediterranean. It produces fruit-driven, often warm and spicy red wines with red berries, herbs, moderate tannins and frequently generous alcohol.

The grape is especially important in Spain, southern France and Sardinia. It shapes wines from Aragón, Priorat, Rioja, the southern Rhône, Languedoc-Roussillon and many other regions, both as a varietal wine and in blends such as GSM with Syrah and Mourvèdre.

What does Grenache Noir taste like?

Grenache Noir often smells of strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, plum, orange peel, garrigue herbs, pepper and sweet spice. Old vines and poor soils can add depth, mineral notes and balsamic complexity.

On the palate it is usually juicy, rounded and softer in tannin than many darker red grapes. Acidity is moderate, alcohol can be noticeable, and the best wines balance warmth and richness with freshness, spice and transparent origin.

Where does Grenache Noir come from?

Grenache Noir is widely believed to have Spanish origins, especially in the north-east around Aragón. From there it spread across the Mediterranean and became hugely important in France as Grenache and on Sardinia as Cannonau.

Key regions include Aragón, Navarra, Rioja, Priorat and other parts of Catalonia, as well as the southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Languedoc, Roussillon and Sardinia. It is also grown in Australia, California, South Africa and other warm regions.

Which Grenache Noir styles are there?

Young Grenache Noir can be bright, juicy and red-fruited, with soft structure and easy charm. Old-vine examples from low-yielding sites can be concentrated, spicy and deep, while still retaining a generous fruit core.

In blends with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan or Cinsault, Grenache brings fruit, warmth and volume. It is also important for rosé wines, especially in southern France and Spain, and for sweet fortified wines in Roussillon and selected Mediterranean traditions.

What food pairs with Grenache Noir?

Grenache Noir pairs well with lamb, grilled vegetables, ratatouille, herb-roasted chicken, pork, chorizo, burgers, spicy stews and Mediterranean baked dishes. Its softer tannins make it more flexible than many very firm reds.

Fuller versions suit game, beef, aged cheese and dishes with rosemary, thyme or paprika. Lighter Grenache can be served slightly chilled with tapas, pizza, tomato pasta and vegetable dishes.
