Muschelkalk Merlot by Hannes Haiden comes from limestone-rich sites on the slopes of the Leithaberg, close to Lake Neusiedl. On the nose it opens with dark berries, ripe plum and a hint of dried herbs. On the palate the wine is powerful and full-bodied, yet clearly structured and dry. Fine, ripe tannins provide grip without masking the juicy fruit. A subtle, stony note from the shell-limestone soils adds precision and length to the finish. Serve with braised beef, lamb or hearty pasta dishes for a classic Burgenland pairing. Give it a little air in the glass and the wine gains even more depth and fine savoury complexity.

One third matures in second- and third-fill barriques, while the remainder is blended with stainless steel wine, keeping the oak subtly integrated.
