For Connoisseurs: La Mondotte Saint Emilion from St. Emilion
La Mondotte is a tiny Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé B planted on a high clay-limestone plateau. Old vines dominated by Merlot with a share of Cabernet Franc root deeply in poor, rocky soils and yield intensely concentrated berries. Vinification takes place in wooden vats before an eighteen to twenty month élevage in new French oak. The wine offers dense dark fruit, graphite, herbs and refined toasted notes. On the palate it is powerful, rich and precise at the same time, with silky tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish – a modern right-bank grand vin of impressive depth. Decanting before serving helps the wine reveal all its aromatic nuance.
