Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is a classic red grape variety from France and an important parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is valued for fragrant red fruit, leafy-herbal notes, fresh acidity and tannins that are usually finer and less massive than Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Loire Valley is the reference point for varietal Cabernet Franc, especially Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny. It is also a key grape in Bordeaux blends and has become increasingly respected in regions from Italy to Canada, the United States and South America.

What does Cabernet Franc taste like?

Cabernet Franc often shows raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, violet, graphite, tobacco, herbs and a characteristic leafy or bell pepper note when cooler-grown. The body is usually medium, with lively acidity and fine, savoury tannins.

Warmer sites can produce darker, riper fruit, while cooler Loire styles remain fresh, aromatic and lightly earthy. Oak may add cedar, spice or cocoa, but the grape''s elegance and herbal lift should remain visible.

Where does Cabernet Franc come from?

Cabernet Franc has deep roots in France. It is central to red wines from the Loire Valley and also plays a major role in Bordeaux, where it is commonly blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today it is grown worldwide, including northern Italy, the United States, Canada, Argentina, Chile and South Africa. Its ability to ripen earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon makes it useful in cooler climates as well as in balanced blends.

Which styles of Cabernet Franc are there?

Loire Cabernet Franc is often medium-bodied, fresh and aromatic, with red fruit, herbs and earthy nuance. Bordeaux-influenced styles can be deeper, more structured and shaped by blending or oak ageing.

New World Cabernet Franc ranges from juicy and approachable to polished and powerful. Rosé styles exist too, but the grape''s most distinctive expressions are dry reds that combine perfume, freshness and savoury detail.

What food pairs with Cabernet Franc?

Cabernet Franc pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck, pork, lamb, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, lentils, grilled vegetables and herb-seasoned stews. Its freshness makes it very flexible.

The wine''s leafy, savoury edge suits dishes with thyme, rosemary, peppers or tomato. Lighter styles work with bistro food and goat cheese, while fuller versions can handle steak, burgers or roast lamb.
