Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan rouge 2022 1,5l

Château Les Carmes Haut‑Brion is a singular Pessac‑Léognan estate with around 30 hectares of vines on gravel, sand, clay and limestone just outside Bordeaux. A high share of Cabernet Franc, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, gives the wine its perfumed, refined character. Whole‑bunch ferments and ageing in a mix of concrete, large foudres, barrels and amphorae add layers of complexity without weight. The bouquet is pure and aromatic, with red and black berries, roses, spice, smoke and subtle cocoa. On the palate Les Carmes Haut‑Brion is medium‑bodied, silky and intensely flavoured yet weightless, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, detailed finish.

Twenty-four months of ageing in new oak, foudre and amphora underline the powerful density and give the wine complex depth.

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Inside the city of Bordeaux itself, in Pessac‑Léognan, an unlikely enclave survives: Château Les Carmes Haut‑Brion, an urban vineyard with a monastic past. Documented from the 16th century, it was held from 1584 until the Revolution by Carmelite friars; since 2010 the estate has been re‑imagined with a sharper, more precise intent....

The grape variety: Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is a classic red grape known for raspberry, redcurrant, herbs, fine tannins and fresh acidity. It is important in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux.

The grape is exciting because it offers elegance and savoury complexity without excessive weight. Pair it with poultry, pork, duck, mushrooms, lentils, lamb and herb-driven dishes. Cabernet Franc
