Masseto is a pure Merlot from a single vineyard on the hills of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. The vines are rooted in a rare blue grey clay that gives the wine great concentration, depth and a fine saline minerality. The bouquet reveals dark cherry, plum and blackberry with hints of violet, mocha and subtle spicy oak. On the palate Masseto is rich and powerful yet extraordinarily silky, with dense fruit and tightly woven, ripe tannins. Vibrant, perfectly integrated acidity adds tension and lift to the wine’s generous texture. The long, layered finish underlines its status as one of Italy’s most sought after reds and a centrepiece for special occasions.
Between sea breezes and Mediterranean scrub, in Tuscany, the coastal terroir around Bolgheri shapes every parcel at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia: gravelly alluvial layers, warm days and cool nights bring definition to Bordeaux varieties rooted close to the Tyrrhenian light....
