Château Haut-Batailley is a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate with about 41 hectares of vines rooted in deep Garonne gravel. The vineyard is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plus a small share of Petit Verdot, and the wine is aged for around 16 months in French oak barrels, a high proportion of them new. The bouquet offers cassis, blackcurrant and cherry with floral, herbal and toasty notes. On the palate Haut-Batailley is focused and classically built, with firm, ripe tannins, bright acidity and a long Pauillac finish marked by graphite and mineral tension.
To read Pauillac in its purest script, one eventually meets Château Haut‑Batailley, Pauillac—a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé of 1855 watched over by the white Tour l’Aspic (1875). Its name nods to a battle from the Hundred Years’ War, while the estate’s modern shape dates to the 1942 division of Batailley; since 2017 the Cazes family has steered the new era....
Cabernet Sauvignon is a world-famous red grape producing dark, structured wines with cassis, blackberry, cedar, firm tannins and ageing potential.
The variety is exciting because it combines power with recognisable character. Pair Cabernet Sauvignon with steak, roast beef, lamb, venison, burgers, mushrooms and hard cheeses.
