Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is a late-ripening red grape best known as a classic blending variety in Bordeaux. In warm conditions it brings deep colour, firm tannin, black fruit, violet perfume and peppery spice.

Although traditionally used in small proportions, Petit Verdot is now also made as a varietal wine in warmer regions such as Spain, Australia, California and parts of South America. These wines are usually bold, dark and structured.

What does Petit Verdot taste like?

Petit Verdot typically offers blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, liquorice, pepper and dark spice. The colour is often deep, and the tannins can be firm, giving the wine a powerful frame.

Oak ageing may add cedar, cocoa, clove or smoky notes. The best examples balance intensity with freshness, while overripe versions can become heavy if the tannin and alcohol are not well managed.

Where does Petit Verdot come from?

Petit Verdot is historically associated with Bordeaux, where it is one of the traditional red varieties used in blends. Because it ripens late, it was often difficult to mature fully in cooler years.

Today it is also grown successfully in warmer climates, including Australia, California, Spain, Argentina and other regions where reliable ripening allows varietal wines with depth and spice.

What styles of Petit Verdot are there?

In blends, Petit Verdot usually contributes colour, tannin, spice and structure rather than dominating the wine. It can add backbone to Cabernet Sauvignon- or Merlot-based cuvées.

As a varietal wine, Petit Verdot is generally full-bodied, dark and oak-friendly, with a serious, concentrated profile. Rosé or sparkling styles are not typical; the grape's strength lies in structured red wines.

What food pairs with Petit Verdot?

Petit Verdot suits grilled steak, lamb, venison, beef stew, barbecue, roasted mushrooms and hard cheeses. Its tannin and dark fruit work best with protein-rich, savoury dishes.

Spiced meat dishes, pepper sauces and charred vegetables can also be excellent. Lighter fish, delicate salads or very sweet dishes are usually overwhelmed by its power.
