Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is one of the world's most recognisable aromatic white grapes. Its deep perfume of rose, lychee, tropical fruit and spice makes it stand apart from fresher, more neutral white-wine varieties.

The grape is especially associated with Alsace, but it is also grown in Germany, Austria, northern Italy, New Zealand, Australia and other cool to moderate regions. Styles range from dry and full-bodied to off-dry, late-harvest and richly sweet.

What does Gewurztraminer taste like?

Gewurztraminer commonly shows rose petals, lychee, mango, peach, apricot, orange peel, ginger, clove and sometimes Turkish delight or honey. It is one of the easiest grapes to identify by aroma alone.

On the palate it is usually medium to full-bodied, with moderate acidity, a soft texture and a naturally generous feel. Dry wines can taste rich even without sweetness, while sweeter styles add honeyed depth and long spicy persistence.

Where does Gewurztraminer come from?

Gewurztraminer belongs to the broader Traminer or Savagnin family, a complex old group of grapes associated with the Alpine and central European wine world. Its modern prestige, however, is strongly linked to Alsace, where it is one of the region's signature varieties.

Beyond Alsace, important examples come from Germany, Austria, Alto Adige, Trentino, New Zealand and selected cool-climate regions elsewhere. The grape needs enough ripeness for aroma, but too much heat can make wines heavy.

Which Gewurztraminer styles are there?

Dry Gewurztraminer is usually aromatic, full-bodied and spicy, often with enough richness to accompany food. It may be fermented in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve perfume rather than oak flavour.

Off-dry, late-harvest and noble-sweet styles are also classic, especially in Alsace. These wines can be powerful, honeyed and long-lived. Sparkling versions are uncommon, while skin-contact examples exist mainly among experimental producers.

What food pairs with Gewurztraminer?

Dry Gewurztraminer pairs well with Thai curry, Indian spices, Moroccan tagines, roast pork, duck, pâté, washed-rind cheeses and dishes with ginger or aromatic herbs. Its perfume stands up to flavours that can overwhelm neutral whites.

Sweeter styles are excellent with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit tarts, almond desserts and spicy-sweet cuisine. Because the grape is naturally expressive, the best pairings are aromatic rather than overly subtle.
