Château Montus is the benchmark estate of Madiran and showcases the full potential of the Tannat grape. The vines are planted on steep, south-facing slopes covered with large pebbles over brown clay, a hot but well-drained terroir that ensures perfect ripeness. The blend is dominated by Tannat with a share of Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are picked by hand, vinified parcel by parcel and matured for many months in French oak barrels. The bouquet delivers black fruits, cherry and plum with notes of spice, tobacco, toast and a touch of leather. On the palate Montus is powerful and concentrated yet balanced, with fresh acidity, firm but polished tannins and a long, savoury, spice-laden finish.
On the foothills of the Pyrenees in Madiran, Château Montus has defined a modern benchmark since 1980. Alain Brumont acquired the estate one year after taking over Bouscassé (1979) and proved that Tannat can speak with both authority and precision when treated parcel by parcel....
The Great Vertical Tasting: A wine through the mirror of time.
Anyone who compares wine across several vintages discovers its development in a particularly impressive way. A vertical tasting reveals how style, maturity, structure and aromas change over time – and helps to find the right vintage for personal taste or a special occasion.
The grape variety: Tannat
Tannat produces dark, full-bodied red wines with blackberry fruit, firm tannins, spice and savory depth. The style can be rustic and traditional or polished and modern.
It is a strong choice with grilled meats, stews, hard cheeses and barbecue, and it is especially exciting for anyone looking for powerful reds with character.
