Werner Achs Blauer Zweigelt Goldberg 2020 1,5l

Blauer Zweigelt Goldberg by Werner Achs comes from the warm Goldberg slopes around Gols in the Neusiedlersee region. This small estate focuses almost exclusively on red wines from local varieties, with Zweigelt playing the leading role. On the nose the wine shows ripe cherry, dark berry fruit and a touch of sour cherry, rounded off by gentle spice and a hint of chocolate. On the palate it is full and rounded, with juicy fruit, soft ripe tannins and a harmonious overall structure. The texture is dense yet easy to drink, supported by moderate acidity and well-integrated oak. A powerful, fruit-driven Zweigelt from Neusiedlersee that pairs beautifully with rustic dishes, grilled meats or pasta with savoury sauces.

Ageing in used barriques combines ripe cherry fruit with gentle oak spice and powerful structure.

Werner Achs

Close to Lake Neusiedl in Gols, Werner Achs has built a reputation on radical focus: a tiny range, maximum intent. Since his late‑1990s beginnings, the estate has pursued a strict “less is more”, rooted in parcels on Goldberg and Altenberg and in red varieties that belong here—Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent....

The grape variety: Zweigelt

Zweigelt is Austria''s leading red grape, producing cherry-scented wines with soft tannins, fresh acidity and gentle spice. It is a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent.

The variety is appealing because it is juicy, versatile and food-friendly. Pair Zweigelt with roast chicken, pork, schnitzel, burgers, mushrooms and mild cheeses.
