Malbec

Malbec, also known in France as Côt, is a red grape variety with deep colour, generous dark fruit and often a smooth, powerful structure. Historically rooted in south-west France, especially Cahors, it became internationally famous through Argentina and particularly Mendoza. Côt is the traditional French name, especially relevant in Cahors, while Malbec is the name most widely recognised in the international wine market.

Typical aromas include plum, blackberry, black cherry, violet, cocoa and spice. Depending on origin, Malbec can be firm, dark and savoury in Cahors or ripe, plush and fruit-driven in Argentina, with high-altitude sites adding freshness and precision.

What does Malbec taste like?

Malbec usually shows plum, blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, often with violet, pepper, cocoa, tobacco or liquorice. Argentine examples often feel riper and rounder, while Cahors can be more tannic, savoury and mineral.

The palate is medium to full-bodied, deeply coloured and structured by noticeable tannin. Oak-aged versions can add vanilla, smoke, chocolate and sweet spice, while fruit-focused styles are juicy, smooth and immediately appealing.

Malbec and Côt: where does it come from?

Malbec originated in France and is deeply rooted in the south-west, especially Cahors, where it is also known as Côt or Auxerrois. There it forms the basis of dark, structured red wines with a long tradition.

Argentina now defines much of the modern image of Malbec. Mendoza, the Uco Valley, Salta and other high-altitude regions produce wines with intense fruit, freshness and balance. The grape is also grown in Chile, the United States, Australia and beyond.

Which Malbec styles are there?

Argentine Malbec is often fruit-forward, rounded and accessible, with dark berries, soft tannins and modern spice. Higher-altitude wines can be fresher, more floral and more precise, with good ageing potential.

Cahors shows a firmer, more savoury and tannic side of the grape. Alongside powerful oak-aged reds, many producers now make fresher, more elegant versions. Malbec rosé exists, but dry red wine remains the main expression.

What food pairs with Malbec?

Malbec is a classic match for grilled beef, steak, burgers, lamb, spicy sausages, barbecue and braised dishes. Its dark fruit and tannin work well with char, meat juices and bold sauces.

Vegetarian pairings also work: grilled aubergine, portobello mushrooms, lentil ragout, chili sin carne and aged hard cheese. Fruiter styles suit casual grilling, while structured Cahors or reserve wines need richer dishes.
